Color theory plays a critical role in the development of effective brands and websites. Color aids in building out a brand’s persona that typically has five dimensions, which include sincerity, excitement, competence, sophistication, and ruggedness.
Pantone’s 2019 Color of the Year is 16-1546 Living Coral, which “embraces us with warmth and nourishment to provide comfort and buoyancy in our continually shifting environment.” It was chosen “in reaction to the onslaught of digital technology and social media increasingly embedding into daily life, we are seeking authentic and immersive experiences that enable connection and intimacy. Sociable and spirited, the engaging nature of PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral welcomes and encourages lighthearted activity. Symbolizing our innate need for optimism and joyful pursuits, PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral embodies our desire for playful expression.” 1
“As a result, by selecting Living Coral for a brand this year, it will automatically convey a warm, uplifting, and comfort-giving point of view.”

So, what does the color Living Coral mean to me? While there are hints of this color sprinkled throughout my oldest daughter’s room, it ultimately reminds me of my favorite surf trip to the Telos Islands in Northern Sumatra, Indonesia. A private boat, paddling out for 10 hours a day, and sunsets that span as far as the eye can see, what’s not to love? For those who know me, it is no surprise that the color coral evokes visions of a tropical destination loaded with perfect coral reef-breaking waves.
Now what is your answer to, “What does Living Coral mean to you?”
